— In the heart of the European quarter - surrounded by the imposing Berlaymont building, the majestic Résidence Palace, the beautiful Jubel-park, and the widely known Wet-street – the Schuman Square does not receive the attention it deserves. The roundabout will be changed beyond recognition and stand out in the city view.

To realize this Beliris organises a design competition that has to provide a study for the redesign of the Schuman Square and its surroundings.

Beliris is the name of the cooperation agreement between the federal state, Belgium, and the Metropolitan District of Brussels. Beliris manages, coordinates, and initiates projects in order to improve the aura and view of Brussels.

ANNOUNCEMENT INTERNATIONAL DESIGN COMPETITION

— Beliris organizes an international design competition searching for a design team that will renew the Schuman Square.

The most important change concerns leading motorised traffic underground, but the protection of the surrounding residential areas is also taken into account. The design should also contain a study of the light-plan for the entire area.

The design team that will be responsible for the design of Schuman Square will be chosen on the basis of an international concept competition. Beliris organizes this competition through a negotiation procedure with an announcement.

The procedure will proceed through two stages:

A qualitative
selection
Awarding the job with contract criteria

* One of the contract criteria relates to the drawing up of a conceptual design (sketch) for the redesign of the wider area of Schuman Square according to a programme of pre-arranged aims. Beliris is supported in the evaluation by an international advisory committee.
