— In the heart of the European quarter - surrounded by the imposing Berlaymont building, the majestic Résidence Palace, the beautiful Jubel-park, and the widely known Wet-street – the Schuman Square does not receive the attention it deserves. The roundabout will be changed beyond recognition and stand out in the city view.

To realize this Beliris organises a design competition that has to provide a study for the redesign of the Schuman Square and its surroundings.

Beliris is the name of the cooperation agreement between the federal state, Belgium, and the Metropolitan District of Brussels. Beliris manages, coordinates, and initiates projects in order to improve the aura and view of Brussels.

LAUREATE OF THE COMPETITION: XAVEER DE GEYTER

The architects bureau Xaveer de Geyter from Brussels is the laureate of the international urban design competition for the redevelopment of the Robert Schuman roundabout. The bureau is assisted by Tritel (mobility), Ney & Partner (stability) and Michel Desvigne (landscape architecture).

The competition has been organized by BELIRIS in association with the International Union of Architects; the jury consisted of representatives of the Federal State, the Brussels Capital Region (among whom the Brussels Master Architect Olivier Bastin), the European Commission, the European Council, the City of Brussels and a team of international experts, namely: Jeroen Zuidgeest (The Netherlands), Alberto Francini (Italy), Martin Haas (Germany), Kimmo Lintula (Finland), Peter Lorenz (Austria), Claire Bailly (France) and Marwan Zouein (Lebanon).

In the meantime, the project will be further elaborated with the main public shareholders and the residents concerned; the works are planned for 2015.

An exhibition with the remaining five projects that have been introduced is planned for 2012.
