Our Aims

— The project concerning the new Schuman Square should take one very important change into consideration: the roundabout will almost entirely be accessible for pedestrians only.

Through traffic will be redirected according to the recommendations of a running mobility study freeing Schuman Square for other activities.

Cyclists and pedestrians, but demonstrators too, will be the main users of the roundabout in the future. Special attention should be paid to the protection of the surrounding residential areas. The study explicitly requests that the inhabitants of the area are shielded as much as possible from any inconvenience. The design also contains a study for the light-plan of the entire area.

The basic aims for the new Schuman Square are: *

consistent intermodal mobility junction

  • rendering the square car-low (with the exception of public transport, emergency services, taxis, and local traffic) according to the mobility study
  • enabling an interaction between various types of public transport
  • allowing every traffic user its own place in the area, both weaker road users and drivers of cars

Reinforcing the symbolic value of Schuman Square as the centre of the European District and the presence of Europe in Brussels.

Creating a harmonious meeting area for inhabitants, civil servants, commuters, tourists, …
